Colder temps could bring snow

Northern edge of state may see wind chills drop to minus 5 degrees.

The first of several cold fronts expected to sweep across the state in the next week will drop temperatures into the low 20s today, and another front early next week could bring a chance of snow to north Georgia.

The colder weather will arrive on brisk winds, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a wind advisory for gusts to 30 mph for all of north and central Georgia through 6 p.m. Thursday. Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport reported sustained winds of 22 mph at 11 a.m., with winds gusting to 28 mph.

In the northeast corner of the state, a wind chill advisory was in effect from 1 p.m. Thursday through 9 a.m. today for nine mountain counties, where the Weather Service warned that wind chills could drop to around minus 5 degrees.

Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Karen Minton is predicting a morning low of 22 in Atlanta today, followed by afternoon highs in the low 40s.

Saturday will be sunny and a little warmer, with afternoon highs around 53, but another jolt of Arctic air will limit Sunday’s highs to the mid-30s.

Morning lows will be in the upper 20s Saturday and low 20s Sunday, Minton said.

Monday is expected to be sunny, with morning lows in the low 20s and afternoon highs in the low 40s, according to Minton.

There’s a 60 percent chance of rain Monday night. The chance of rain increases to 70 percent Tuesday. Lows ear- ly Tuesday in the mid- to upper 30s should keep the precipitation all rain across most of metro Atlanta, but the Weather Service said the rain could be mixed with snow in the far northern suburbs where lows Monday night will be a few degrees colder. The rain will continue Tuesday night, when temps could again be cold enough for a rain/snow mix across parts of extreme north Georgia.
