DeGrom returns, starts today

Mets pitcher rejoins team after infant son’s health issue.

Jacob deGrom has returned to the New York Mets and says all is well with his infant son, Jaxon, following a scare deGrom revealed was a breathing problem.

DeGrom will start today against the Atlanta Braves after missing one turn because of a sore right lat muscle and another start because of his son’s health concern.

DeGrom says his son had a form of apnea that caused him to stop breathing after falling asleep.

“It was definitely scary,” deGrom said. “He had to be checked into the NICU and they had to monitor him in there but when all the tests came back and nothing was seriously wrong we were pretty relieved. But at first it was a scary time.”

The baby is home with deGrom’s wife, Stacy.

Manager Terry Collins says deGrom may be limited to 85 pitches today. DeGrom threw 71 pitches in a simulated game in Florida on Tuesday.

Orioles: Pitcher Yovani Gallardo was placed on the 15-day disabled list with tendinitis in the shoulder of his pitching arm. Gallardo complained of a sore right shoulder in his start Friday against the Kansas City Royals and was pulled after two innings and 45 pitches. The Orioles flew him back to Baltimore to be examined. Baltimore activated left-hander Brian Matusz, who had been on the disabled list with a left side strain.

Braves: Right-hander Casey Kelly was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett, and left-hander Matt Marksberry was recalled to work in the bullpen. Kelly allowed one run in three innings in relief of Bud Norris in Friday night’s 6-3 loss to the New York Mets and likely would not have been available again in relief for a few days.

Umpire out with injury: Jeff Kellogg, who left Friday night’s game between the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves with an undisclosed injury, has been replaced for the remainder of the weekend series. Greg Gibson, who had been in Cincinnati for the Cubs-Reds series, will serve as acting crew chief today and Sunday. Kellogg was home-plate umpire when he was hit by a foul tip in the first inning. He left the game after the inning. Braves assistant trainer Jeff Lovell appeared to look at Kellogg’s head before the umpire walked off the field. The game resumed with a three-man crew. MLB spokesman Mike Teevan said Kellogg is considered day to day and will remain under evaluation.
