Anti-malware available for Android

- Bill Husted

Q: I got an LG tablet back in August and find myself using it more and more for Internet browsing. It occurred to me that I may need to protect this device from viruses, malware, etc. just as I do my laptop. Is there a security app that you could recommend? Thanks for your help. — Susan (No last name given)

A: Your tablet uses the Android operating system instead of Windows or the Mac OS. The Android operating system is very safe compared to either. I don’t use any anti-malware protection on my Android machine - I don’t think it’s necessary. Now what does the future hold as far as new threats? I don’t know. It could be that over time and as more people use the Android tablets hackers will do a better job attacking them. Hackers tend to concentrate on the most common systems since they want to hit the systems most people use. There is anti-malware software out there for Android. Here’s an example: https://play.google.com/ store/apps/details?id=org. malwarebytes.antimalware&hl=en There’s no harm in using it.

Q: I used to read your column many years ago. After I purchased the lowest priced, lowest memory, Apple I’ve never needed any help from you. — Peter Koenen

A: Apples work fine and I’m glad you are experiencing that. I have one sitting a few feet away from the PC I’m using at the moment. Unlike your own experience, I’ve had glitches on both PCs and Apples. Most people have occasional computer problems no matter what platform they use. So you’re lucky and I’m glad that you are.
