Croatia cuts U.S. lead in Davis Cup
Ivan Dodig and Marin Cilic kept Croatia alive in its Davis Cup quarterfinal match with the United States, beating twins Bob and Mike Bryan 6-2, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 on Saturday.
The Dodig-Cilic team cut Croatia’s deficit to 2-1 heading into reverse singles today on the Tualatin Hills hard court in Portland, Ore. The U.S. took a 2-0 lead Friday when Jack Sock and John Isner won the opening singles matches.
Today, Isner will open against Cilic and Sock will face Borna Coric.
The U.S.-Croatia winner will advance to the World Group semifinals, facing the France-Czech Republic quarterfinal winner on Sept. 16-18. If the U.S. advances, it will host a semifinal at a site to be determined.
The United States is trying to break a nine-year Davis Cup title drought. The U.S. won in 2007, beating Russia 4-1, and has won a Davis Cup-high 32 titles but only one since 1995.
Hall of Fame Championships: Second-seeded Ivo Karlovic of Croatia and third-seeded Gilles Muller of Luxembourg advanced to the final in Newport, R.I., with semifinal victories Saturday.
Karlovic reached his third consecutive final in Newport, beating fourth-seeded Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus 7-6 (3), 7-6 (6). In the first semifinal, Muller served 18 aces in a 6-3, 6-4 victory over eighthseeded Donald Young.
The matches followed an hour-long induction ceremony into the Hall. Marat Safin and Justine Henin headed the 2016 class.
Bucharest (Romania) Open: Top-seeded Simona Halep came from a set down to reach the final and take a shot at her second home title. She needed more than two hours to beat Vania King of the U.S. 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-3 for the second time this year. That set up a final between Halep and seventh-seeded Anasta- sija Sevastova of Latvia, who defeated Laura Siegemund of Germany 6-3, 6-2.
