Croatia cuts U.S. lead in Davis Cup

Ivan Dodig and Marin Cilic kept Croatia alive in its Davis Cup quarterfin­al match with the United States, beating twins Bob and Mike Bryan 6-2, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 on Saturday.

The Dodig-Cilic team cut Croatia’s deficit to 2-1 heading into reverse singles today on the Tualatin Hills hard court in Portland, Ore. The U.S. took a 2-0 lead Friday when Jack Sock and John Isner won the opening singles matches.

Today, Isner will open against Cilic and Sock will face Borna Coric.

The U.S.-Croatia winner will advance to the World Group semifinals, facing the France-Czech Republic quarterfin­al winner on Sept. 16-18. If the U.S. advances, it will host a semifinal at a site to be determined.

The United States is trying to break a nine-year Davis Cup title drought. The U.S. won in 2007, beating Russia 4-1, and has won a Davis Cup-high 32 titles but only one since 1995.

Hall of Fame Championsh­ips: Second-seeded Ivo Karlovic of Croatia and third-seeded Gilles Muller of Luxembourg advanced to the final in Newport, R.I., with semifinal victories Saturday.

Karlovic reached his third consecutiv­e final in Newport, beating fourth-seeded Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus 7-6 (3), 7-6 (6). In the first semifinal, Muller served 18 aces in a 6-3, 6-4 victory over eighthseed­ed Donald Young.

The matches followed an hour-long induction ceremony into the Hall. Marat Safin and Justine Henin headed the 2016 class.

Bucharest (Romania) Open: Top-seeded Simona Halep came from a set down to reach the final and take a shot at her second home title. She needed more than two hours to beat Vania King of the U.S. 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-3 for the second time this year. That set up a final between Halep and seventh-seeded Anasta- sija Sevastova of Latvia, who defeated Laura Siegemund of Germany 6-3, 6-2.
