Coach: Gators weren’t at fault

Muschamp makes ‘slight adjustments’ to offense schemes.

- Information from SECcountry. com and the Seattle Times was used in compiling this report.

Around this time last year, then-Auburn coordinator Will Muschamp was at the beach, relaxing and perhaps content to miss his first SEC Media Days since 2011.

The new South Carolina coach returned from his hiatus and was asked to reflect upon what he learned during his four years presiding over Florida football, which ended with a 28-21 overall record.

Muschamp of course began by highlighting a number of positives — stout defense, strong special teams and improvements in the classroom and off the field — before conceding the most obvious flaw from his time in Gainesville.

“We need to play better on offense,” Muschamp said. “So you go back and (look at) the schemes and how we practice. It wasn’t the players, we had guys get drafted. I’ve evaluated all of those things and made some slight adjustments in how we prepare and what we need to do to improve and get better.”

Whether “slight adjustments” is what Gamecocks fans want to hear is up for debate. None of Muschamp’s Florida offenses ever ranked higher than eighth-best in the SEC, in terms of points scored per game. Arguably his best offensive year (2014) came under Kurt Roper, the man who will continue to be his offensive coordinator in Columbia, S.C., but that unit still finished with the second-fewest total yards in the conference.

The wheel deal

Khalan Laborn , a four-star running back, announced his commitment to Florida State after pulling up in a Lamborghini customized with Seminoles logos and decals.

The FSU compliance office should be expecting that first phone call from NCAA investigatorsin3.2.1.

McElroy blasts Vols

Former Alabama quarterback and SEC Network analyst Greg McElroy issued a biting challenge to Tennessee’s defensive tackles. “They need to step up,” McElroy said. “They’re not the deepest group, and that’s OK . ... But they need to be more effective than they were last year.” The Volunteers ranked No. 45 nationally in rush defense in 2015 — ninth in the SEC — allowing 151.6 yards a game. McElroy, along with former LSU All-American defensive lineman Marcus Spears, specifically singled out Tennessee sophomore defensive tackle Kahlil McKenzie as a player who must improve this fall. “We heard all the hype and hoopla surrounding McKenzie last year,” McElroy said. “How he was going to be the best defensive tackle in the SEC from Day 1. You know what, he was a disappointment. I know he was a freshman last year, but if he’s going to come in with those type of accolades and expectations, you need to be more sound in the run game than he was a year ago.”

Return team

O.J. Simpson’s Heisman Trophy, stolen from USC in 1994, is finally headed back to Heritage Hall.

The Trojans, trying to milk the drama, wanted it delivered in a slow-moving white Bronco.
