City Council OKs parks bond referendum

-

The Johns Creek City Council this week MONDAY, JULY 25 approved a $40 million referendum for the Nov. 8 ballot to raise money for park improvements and to acquire green space.

If voters approve, bond proceeds would be used to implement the city’s Recreation and Parks Strategic Master Plan, adopted by the Council in March.

Funded projects would include the development of two parks – Cauley Creek Park on the Chattahoochee River and the Technology Park Linear Park along Medlock Bridge Road – and the restoration of Rogers Bridge over the Chattahoochee, city officials said.

The bond also would fund construction of an indoor recreation center, a 40,000-square-foot facility housing two full-court basketball gyms, a running track, climbing wall, weight room and classrooms, according to the Master Plan. To view the plan: bit.ly/2arRO8V

Contract for work on Ga. 120 awarded

The Johns Creek City Council has awarded a $6.9 million contract to C.W. Matthews Contracting Co. Inc. to improve Ga. 120/ Abbotts Bridge Road from Jones Bridge to Parsons Bridge roads.

The mile-long project would add turn lanes, landscaped medians, curbs and gutters, sidewalks and trails, a city spokesman said.

Construction is to begin in September and be completed in a year. It is the first of four projects being coordinated with the Georgia Department of Transportation to improve Ga. 120 from Old Milton Parkway to Peachtree Industrial Boulevard.

The next project will be improvements to the Ga. 120/ Kimball Bridge Road section to the west, according to a Johns Creek staff report. It is in the right-of-way acquisition phase and is expected to be ready to advertise for bids next spring, with construction beginning in the fall of 2017.

Contract to repair walls, replace roofs approved

The Alpharetta City Council has approved $281,139 contract to restore walls and replace roofs of public recreational facilities and the city jail.

The project is being awarded to Garland/DBS Inc. as contractor. Garland solicited bids from potential subcontractors and identified two low bidders: SafeShield Roofing Inc. for the recreation and parks facilities work ($88,785), and Roof Options Inc. for the public safety facility ($192,354), according to a staff report.

The Crabapple Government Center will have its masonry walls restored and windows sealed; and the Equestrian Center Lower Show Office and Cogburn Road Park, a comprehensive exterior rehabilitation and waterproofing.
