Nishikori advances to Rogers semifinals

-

Japan’s Kei Nishikori beat Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 on Friday to advance to the Rogers Cup semifinals in Toronto.

The third-seeded Nishikori will face second-seeded Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland today. Nishikori won in Memphis in February for his 11th ATP Tour title.

Wawrinka rolled over South Africa’s Kevin Anderson 6-1, 6-3.

In night matches, topseeded Novak Djokovic of Serbia faced fifth-seeded Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic, and fourth-seeded Canadian Milos Raonic played 10th-seeded Gael Monfils of France.

Rogers Cup women: Angelique Kerber put any concerns about her left elbow to rest Friday in the Rogers Cup.

The second-seeded German player advanced to the semifinals with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over unseeded Russian Daria Kasatkina. And Kerber did it without a twinge from the elbow that forced her to withdraw from a match last week in Sweden.

“My elbow is feeling much better,” Kerber said. “I had a lot of treatments when I came here.”

The Australian Open winner will face fifth-seeded Simona Halep, a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 winner over No. 9 Svetlana Kuznetsova.

In a night match, 10th-seeded Madison Keys of the United States faced 16th-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia.
