Houston’s Hopkins holds out

Pro Bowl WR wants rookie deal redone after huge season.

Disenchanted with a lack of contract negotiations and playing under his original rookie deal, Houston Texans Pro Bowl wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins didn’t report for training camp Saturday and is holding out, according to league sources. Hopkins is entering the fourth year of a $15.55 million rookie contract that includes a $3.9 million signing bonus and a total of $6.18 million guaranteed.

Paid a $1.1 million guaranteed base salary last season, Hopkins is due a $1 million nonguaranteed base salary this season and a $445,004 roster bonus on the fifth day of training camp. A big part of the Texans’ future involves Hopkins, whose $7.915 million fifth-year team option was exercised to keep him under contract through the 2017 season.

Hopkins is subject to fines of up to $40,000 per day for missing camp. The Texans’ first day of practice is today. They are expected to place Hopkins on the reserve-did not report list. He can be activated from that list whenever he officially reports to camp.

“No team likes a player to stick a gun to their head and try to force them to get a deal done,” said Joel Corry, a former NFL agent who writes about the business of football for CBS Sports. “Hopkins’ leverage is he was the Texans’ entire passing game last year.”

Hopkins didn’t return telephone calls and text messages. On social media, Hopkins retweeted Cardinals safety Tyrann Mathieu: “Guys can under perform and get cut, over perform & don’t get paid. Life.”

Hopkins is coming off a breakthrough season in which he caught a careerhigh 111 passes for 1,521 yards and 11 touchdowns and delivered a series of acrobatic, one-handed catches. He emerged as the Texans’ offensive player with the most impact despite playing with four different quarterbacks.

49ers: Right tackle Anthony Davis was reinstated by the NFL after an 11-month retirement that he planned to come back from all along. The 49ers made the announcement ahead of their first day of training camp today under new coach Chip Kelly.

Davis was the 49ers’ firstround draft choice, the 11th overall pick, in the 2010 draft out of Rutgers. He was affected by a concussion late in the 2014 season and in June 2015, at age 25, Davis announced his retirement.

Also Saturday, San Francisco placed nose tackle Ian Williams on the reserve/ non-football injury list.

Chiefs: Eric Fisher could be protecting the blind side for Kansas City quarterbacks for the next six years.

The Chiefs announced they had signed the left tackle to a contract extension. A person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press it was a four-year, $48 million deal that includes $40 million guaranteed.

The Chiefs hoped Fisher would develop into a franchise left tackle when they made him the first overall pick in the 2013 draft out of Central Michigan. He struggled mightily in his first couple years as he adjusted to life in the NFL, but came into his own last season, adeptly protecting quarterback Alex Smith and helping keep the Chiefs’ run game on track.

Vikings: Running back Adrian Peterson is being held out of full-team drills because of a hamstring pull he suffered while working out prior to training camp. Peterson has been doing some conditioning work on the side.

“He can do things. He just can’t turn it all the way. So we’re just being careful,” coach Mike Zimmer said.

The Vikings also kept kickoff returner/wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson out of practice following an injury around his left shoulder Friday that occurred while he fell trying to make a catch.

Falcons: Star receiver Julio Jones insists the apparent foot injury that limited him from full participation in training camp again Saturday is no big deal. Jones, who took part in individual work but was held out of team drills for the second straight day, said it is “definitely nothing to worry about.”

Cardinals: Coach Bruce Arians said he expects firstround draft pick Robert Nkemdeche to be sidelined for two weeks with a high ankle sprain. The defensive tackle was injured in the first day of rookie training camp on Tuesday.
