Saying they seek transparency in city finances, Johns Creek officials have announced an “Open Checkbook” online financial data portal where residents can see how their tax dollars are being spent.

“By providing this financial data to our taxpayers, it emphasizes the city of Johns Creek’s commitment to transparency,” said Mayor Mike Bodker.

The website offers charts, graphs and tables so users can find payment information by department, vendor and expenditure type.

Information can be browsed through clicks or searched using a search field.

The site offers a list of vendors, categories and descriptions of spending.

Supporters of the change cited safety issues, as well as matters of quality, durability and longevity of buildings in turning to steel and masonry. But the American Wood Council and Georgia Forestry Association objected, saying wood construction was more sustainable and that adoption of the ordinance could hurt the industry.

Fill out form online prior to removing any trees

Johns Creek has posted a new form online where residents who want to remove trees can learn if they live within a protected area and need to first seek city permission.

Protected areas are the Chattahochee River Corridor (within 2,000 feet of the river), undisturbed stream buffers (within 50 feet of a stream), or where landscaping is required by zoning.

A resident can complete the form, giving his or her address, the location of the tree to be removed, the reason for tree removal and photos of the targeted tree.

City staff will review the request and let the resident know if permission is granted.

The city says residents also should keep in mind that tree removal also may have to be approved by their homeowners association. Those with questions can contact a city planner at 678-512-3200.
