Police may soon wear body cameras

-

The Lawrenceville City Council will vote Sept. 7 on a request by the Lawrenceville Police Department to use asset forfeiture funds for the purchase of body wearable cameras. The continuously recording video cameras would be worn by officers while on duty without having to remember to turn them on and off during a critical incident.

Lawrenceville police currently have video cameras in all patrol vehicles. The addition of body cameras will add another source of evidence for the protection of citizens and officers.

Council members expressed concern that city officers need this level of evidence, but agreed the equipment is inevitable. According to Chief of Police Randy Johnson, “This is to show everybody we’re upfront in what we’re doing. We’re doing it right and we want you to see we’re doing it right. We’ll keep this video footage for seven years, well past the time required for most cases.”
