A Mattingly-Puig reunion in Miami?
It’s fun to imagine, but mutual dislike makes collaboration unlikely.
Don Mattingly didn’t feel appreciated by the Dodgers. Yasiel Puig feels betrayed by them, as they suddenly decided to crack down on his behavior after years of looking the other way.
What if they were to bury the hatchet to take down their common enemy?
It probably won’t happen, but it’s fun to imagine — Dodgers vs. Marlins in the National League wild-card game, with Puig in right field for the Marlins and Mattingly in their dugout.
From a baseball perspective, the move makes sense for the Marlins, who have lost All-Star outfielder Giancarlo Stanton for the remainder of the season. Stanton’s absence is threatening to derail the team’s surprising run at a postseason berth. The Marlins are desperate to replace Stanton’s power, enough to where they considered making a run at broken-down Alex Rodriguez, according to multiple reports.
In his first eight games for Triple-A Oklahoma City following his demotion, Puig batted .500 with three home runs and 11 runs batted in.
Of course, there are factors outside of baseball, the most important being that Mattingly and Puig can’t stand each other.
“That’s not happening,” one source said.
He said it
Cubs manager Joe Maddon, to reporters, on what he was thinking when first baseman Anthony Rizzo made an acrobatic catch of a foul pop-up: “Just that he would stick the landing. I was hoping for at least a 9.5 from the Luxembourg judge.”
Welcome back
Former Diamondback Ender Inciarte, the Braves’ leadoff man, received a round of applause and a few cheers from the fans in Phoenix upon being announced to start the game. Inciarte and former Arizona top prospect Dansby Swanson, traded to Atlanta for Shelby Miller in the offseason, were in Monday’s lineup. Inciarte had two hits and scored twice.
Carter crushes
Chris Carter became the first Brewer to reach 30 home runs in a season since 2012 when Ryan Braun hit 41 and Corey Hart had 30. He has hit 21 home runs at Miller Park. “I always love coming back (to Milwaukee) and hitting,” Carter said.
Reddick injured
Josh Reddick’s difficult early tenure as a Dodger took a comical but painful turn when he injured his finger when his hand got caught in a hotel door. Reddick was trying to hold the door open for a room-service cart. “I’m at rock bottom right now,” Reddick said. “But I will climb out.” Reddick is hitting .149 as a Dodger.
Strasburg return
Nationals manager Dusty Baker expects Stephen Strasburg to spend the minimum time on the DL.
“Hopefully he’ll be good in September and hopefully in October,” Baker said. “I had to convince him that the risk isn’t worth the gain right now.”
