Nadal ends season due to wrist injury

-

Rafael Nadal is cutting short his 2016 season so he can fully recover from a left wrist injury.

The 14-time Grand Slam champion said Thursday he is still bothered by the injury that kept him out of action for more than two months this season and wants to treat it properly before coming back in 2017.

The 30-year-old Spaniard said he will miss indoor tournaments in Basel, Switzerland, next week and Paris next month. He is also ruled out of the season-ending ATP Finals in London next month.

Stockholm Open: Jack Sock of the U.S. edged Germany’s Dustin Brown 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-4 in a second-round match.

Kevin Anderson of South Africa also advanced to the quarterfinals by beating American Ryan Harrison 7-6 (8), 6-4.

European Open: Topseeded David Goffin beat Florian Mayer of Germany 7-5, 6-4 to ensure a Belgian made it through to the quarterfinals in Antwerp, Belgium.

Goffin will next play Romanian qualifier Marius Copil, who ended the challenge of another Belgian, Steve Darcis, 7-6 (3), 6-2.

Luxembourg Open: Second-seeded Caroline Wozniacki withdrew because of illness, allowing Monica Niculescu of Romania to advance to the semifinals.

U.S. qualifier Lauren Davis also advanced by beating Andrea Petkovic of Germany 2-6, 7-5, 6-2.

Kremlin Cup: Top-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova beat ninth-seeded Hungarian Timea Babos 7-5, 6-7 (2), 6-2 in the quarterfinals in Moscow to remain on course to claim the final spot in the WTA Finals.

Kuznetsova will qualify for next week’s eight-player finals in Singapore only if she wins the Moscow tournament.
