Hugh Jackman prepares to pop his claws for the last time as Wolverine

Parting, much like the popping of adamantium claws from one’s hands, is such sweet sorrow.

After much teasing on various social-media platforms, 20th Century Fox finally released the first look at Hugh Jackman’s final performance as Wolverine with the trailer for “Logan.” With an obvious and likely fanboyapproved nod to writer Mark Millar and artist Steve McNiven’s 2008 Marvel Comics hit “Old Man Logan,” the trailer shows us a bleak, Mad Maxesque future where mutants are all but dead and Wolverine is not the man he used to be. Literally. He’s scarred and looks at times to be battered and beaten; his ability to heal quickly that once made him all but indestructible is not working like it once did.

We see one familiar X-face: Patrick Stewart reprises his role as Professor X, the man who sent Logan on a journey to discover the secrets of his past in the first X-Men film, 2000’s “X-Men.” He’s assisting Wolverine once again, and is joined this time by a young girl who looks like she’ll play a pivotal role.

Bad guys are after her, so Wolverine and Professor X will take on the task of shielding her. But does she really need protection? We can’t expect such a big reveal in the first trailer, but IMDb notes that young actress Sienna Novikov has been cast as “Laura” in the film. As fans of the comic series may know, Laura is the name of X-23, a female clone of Wolverine with claws of her own. We predicted she would make the perfect replacement for Jackman’s Wolverine.
