APD recruiting young leaders for academy

The Atlanta Police Department is looking for leaders ages 18-25 to join the Millennial Leaders Police Citizens Academy. The program encourages participan­ts to provide feedback to enhance police and community relations. The course will include: Active shooter instructio­n. Law enforcemen­t interactio­ns specific to young adults.

Law enforcemen­t and social media. Criminal procedure. Sex traffickin­g. Use of force. Advice for after the party (How alcohol impairs judgment).

The class will be held Dec. 19-20 at the Public Safety Headquarte­rs, 226 Peachtree Street SW, Atlanta.

New sustainabi­lity director appointed

Mayor Kasim Reed has appointed John R. Seydel III the new director of the office of sustainabi­lity for the city of Atlanta. Seydel replaces Stephanie Stuckey Benfield, the city’s new chief resilience officer.

Previously, Seydel was CEO of the Revolution Nation, a group connecting millennial­s to their elected representa­tives. He has also worked with the United Nations and the Southern Co. in renewable energy and with the Captain Planet Foundation. He serves as associate trustee of the Turner Foundation.

Seydel received his bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Denver. In his new role, Seydel will work across department­s within the city of Atlanta and with a host of external partners in the areas of nonprofit, business, community and academia.
