Man charged in 2004 slaying of girlfriend
A man was jailed Sunday morning in connection with the stabbing death of a Gwinnett County woman in 2004.
Nicolas Herminio Reyes was booked into the Gwinnett jail at 12:14 a.m., according to official records.
He was wanted for 12 years in connection with the death of his 44-year-old girlfriend, Sadot Ozuna-Carmona.
Ozuna-Carmona was found dead Aug. 1, 2004, of an apparent stab wound to the neck, police said.
Her roommate found her at their apartment at 503 Amber Drive in Norcross.
Other people around the apartment told investigators there had been a birthday party the night before that had gone on until the early morning.
Witnesses saw Ozuna-Carmona arguing with her intoxicated boyfriend, police said. None of the witnesses could recall having seen Ozuna-Carmona after 1 a.m.
Reyes was in the jail awaiting a first appearance hearing Sunday morning.
3 dead in crash on Campbellton Road
Three people are dead and nearly a dozen homes were without power after a violent crash along Campbellton Road early Sunday.
Atlanta police have not confirmed if ice or the weather were factors in the accident, but they have acknowledged the car was traveling at a high rate of speed moments before it crashed into a power pole around 3 a.m.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet released the names of the victims.
Utility crews were still cleaning up the crash site on Campbellton Road and Niskey Lake Road late Sunday morning.
About 10 homes were left without power due to the crash.
Shooting reported at Brookhaven bar
Brookhaven police confronted at least one armed person after a shooting was reported Sunday morning inside the Northeast Plaza at 3363 Buford Highway.
That shooting was reported just before 3 a.m. at Acapulco Tropical, a sports bar, in the strip mall, Brookhaven police spokesman Maj. Brandon Gurley said.
“All parties involved in the shooting were eventually located,” Gurley said.
“Detectives are working to sort out the details surrounding the shooting and file charges on those responsible.”
Gwinnett firefighter cars broken into
Cars parked at four fire stations in Gwinnett County were targeted by thieves overnight.
Firefighters discovered the break-ins Sunday morning, Gwinnett police spokesman Sgt. Rich Long said.
Gwinnett County Fire spokesman Capt. Tommy Rutledge said the thieves broke into cars and stole items from fire stations 5, 31, 15 and 23.
A separate location, the former fire station number 10, was also a target and a county-owned vehicle was entered, Long said.
One firefighter told Channel 2 Action News his gun was stolen out of his truck at the station in Norcross.
He said he and his partner were working a fire and when they got back around 7 a.m., police filled the parking lot.
At least one gun was stolen from a firefighter’s car in a previous incident, Rutledge told Channel 2.
Thieves broke into cars last Monday at stations 9 and 21, in Lawrenceville and Suwannee, Rutledge said.
A suspicious person was chased on foot by officers at fire station 31, which is across from Georgia Gwinnett College. That individual was not apprehended.
Gwinnett police are working closely with Gwinnett fire personnel to investigate these incidents and to prevent further incidents from occurring, Rutledge said.
“We’re encouraging crews to keep a vigilant watch on their parking lot, all hours of the night and day,” Rutledge said.
“We’ve asked police departments in our jurisdictions to step up patrols in our parking lot, and it was again that very extra patrol that thwarted a vehicle break-in at this fire station.”
