Take to task

What’s not working around metro Atlanta

- JOHN THOMPSON FOR THE AJC

New item-Ga. 400

One of the most frequent issues we hear about from readers is problems on one of the regions’ busiest highways, Ga. 400. This week was no exception as another sharp-eyed reader pointed out a problem on the northern end of the busy state highway.

“I will tell you what is not working around Atlanta, CW Mathews company on Ga 400. After a blistering pace of work on 400 northbound from McFarland to Ga.369, work came to a halt in late November. The only work now is the bridge over Lake Lanier and some berm work on Ga. 400 north. What is the problem?” asked Dennis Muzik.

Another item that always seems to catch our eye is traffic stop devices. Whether it’s an ill-timed light or a stop sign that’s been hit, the devices take a beating in the region. This week brings a new challenge, and one that does not appear very often.

“The stop sign at the north end of Edie Avenue is missing and needs to be reinstalled immediately. This is where the street dead-ends into East Confederate Avenue,” wrote James Stephens.

We enlisted the aid of sleuths in the city’s public works department and will let you know when it’s been found. Days on list: 6 Who’s looking into it: City of Atlanta Department of Public Works Commissioner Richard Mendoza, 404-330-6240, rmendoza@atlantaga.gov

New item-DeKalb County

Another issue that seems to be constantly cropping up in the region is issue with storm grates. Whether it’s storm grates that have collapsed or are clogged, our readers are good in pointing out potential dangerous situations for pedestrians and motorists. A reader from DeKalb County pointed out a problem area this week.

“A few months ago I reported two drainage covers that were damaged and were a safety hazard on Colonial Homes Road. They have not been fixed and are now more dangerous. The one in this photo is completely open on the sidewalk with no caution sign, barrier, or tape. It is about a 20-feet drop to the bottom. Imagine a child falling in this thing!” said Jerry Barnes.
