Board OKs $339K roadwork contract
Cherokee County hasawarded a $339,470 contract for intersection improvements at Alabama Road (Ga. 92) and Ragsdale Road/Claremore Drive in Woodstock.
The Board of Commissioners awarded the work to Bartow Paving Co. Inc., the lowest of nine bidders, to expand the intersection to include dual left-turn lanes, a dedicated through lane and a dedicated right-turn lane on the southbound approach of Ragsdale to Ga. 92. The work also calls for a dedicated leftturn lane on Claremore Drive, as well as adjustments to the traffic signal.
According to the contract, Bartow Paving is to begin work within seven calendar days of the notice to proceed, and to not do work or move equipment or materials that visibly interferes with traffic between 7 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday unless allowed by the county engineer. through 2017, under which county-based companies get a “local preference credit” of 5 percent when they submit bids for projects of less than $1 million. Public works and road projects aren’t included.
Businesses have to meet several requirements, including having their principal office in Forsyth, a valid business license and a banking relationship with a branch located in the county. Procurement officials said that five transactions were awarded through the program in 2016.

While commissioners serve four-year terms as elected representatives of their districts, the commission elects its own officers internally for a one-year term each January.
UPCOMING County off hook for extra bridge funding
The Braves Bridge will receive more funding but not from the county.
These decisions were made in a 5-0 vote Tuesday by the Cobb County Board of Commissioners.
The Galleria Authority will pay $104,781 for the installation of an elevator near the bridge tie-in to its parking structure.
The Cumberland Community Improvement District will pay $449,128 for the bridge to be completed by April 1 to pay for more manpower, equipment, supervision, overtime and overhead expenses.
This extra amount brings the total construction cost to $10,534,537 with Northwest Express Roadbuilders as the contractor.
Funding is from not only the Cumberland CID but also the Federal Transit Administration, the Atlanta Braves and the Cumberland Special Service District 1 Fund.
The 1,110-foot I-285 MultiUse Bridge will span between SunTrust Park and Galleria Drive, I-285 and Circle 75 Parkway for pedestrians and buses.
