Sidewalks coming to Hillcrest Road in Lilburn

The Lilburn City Council voted Monday to accept a Gwinnett County Community Developmen­t Block Grant in the amount of $260,565. These federal funds will be used for constructi­on of a 5-foot-wide sidewalk along Hillcrest Road between Burns Road and Indian Trail Road.

The CDBG program is authorized by Title 1 of the Housing and Community Developmen­t Act of 1974. It provides annual grants for a wide range of housing, community and economic developmen­t projects.

According to the city, the new ordinance is “an effort to protect the integrity of Old Town.” Any existing vehicles will be grandfathe­red, though the city is not aware of any current violations. Mayor Johnny Crist said, “We want to make downtown a model, beginning with Main Street.” a groundbrea­king in February, with ambitious plans to complete constructi­on and be ready for move in by the end of this year.

The public works facility will bring together the city’s services including damage prevention, gas and electric department­s, fleet maintenanc­e, streets and sanitation. The $17,250,000 budget has an additional $2 million added to cover rock, design and constructi­on contingenc­ies.

In discussing the expense, Council member Tony Powell noted, “the guys and women who fill up that building (current public works facility) have worked in the worst conditions of any utility in the state.
