Police to reintroduce K-9 program by July

The Lilburn Police Department’s K-9 program was deactivated a number of years ago. Current Police Chief Bruce Hedley has decided it’s time to reintroduce the K-9 program and has selected a handler from within the ranks of the department and a vehicle is being manufactured for the program.

At Monday evening’s city council meeting Chief Hedley accepted $1,100 from the Lilburn Citizens Police Academy Partnership, $1329.20 from the VCA Animal Hospital and $300 from Lilburn Square Shopping Center. The funds are designated to be spent on behalf of the Police Department for the new K-9 Unit’s needs.

The K-9 Unit will focus on three major priorities: search for and locate illegal narcotics, especially opiates, track and locate suspects wanted for committing crimes and positive community outreach, especially within the school system.

After a dog is selected, the handler, Officer AJ Ajanovic and the dog will attend training together. The dog will be on duty by July. lakes in Technology Park to have “resort-style” amenities including a pool, boat dock, hiking/ biking trail, cyber café, fitness facilities and a dog park. Access to the development will be from Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and Reps Miller Road. with a pedestrian bridge and a playground.
