City considers renaming Chattahoochee Drive

-

Duluth has been investigating the possibility of changing the name of Chattahoochee Drive to West Main Street from Rogers Bridge Road to Peachtree Industrial Boulevard. The purpose of the change is to provide more continuity and connectivity from downtown to the completed Sugarloaf Market Place Development.

Two issues have emerged. Chattahoochee Drive is a city owned road that is county maintained. With city owned roads, the local jurisdiction has the authority by resolution to enact the name change without approval from the county.

County procedure to change a street name includes notifying affected property owners and obtaining signatures of support at least 51 percent of the property owners for the name changed. Duluth currently has 75 percent support from properties along Chattahoochee Drive for the name change.

The city council will vote on the name change at the next scheduled council meeting Feb. 13 at City Hall, 3167 Main St.

City postpones vote on Northolt Parkway zoning

The Suwanee City Council recently postponed a decision on a zoning request by John A. Hastings and Lennar Georgia Inc. for property at 558 and 608 Northolt Parkway. The 11-acre property is currently zoned for mixed-use development allowing for office and institutional uses as part of a larger development known as the Terraces at Suwanee Gateway. The zoning request asks to allow for the development of 67 attached single-family townhomes.

If approved, the townhomes would be front and side brick with concrete accents and be a minimum of 24 feet wide and 2,000 square feet.

A new 24-foot wide street would bridge over a stream that bisects the site to allow access to the rear-entry units.

The City Council will revisit the issue at the next meeting scheduled for Feb. 28.
