Window opens for school-choice transfers

Cherokee County School District opened the window Feb. 1 for school-choice reassignments and transfer requests for the 201718 school year.

Sixteen Cherokee schools are “open,” meaning classroom space is available to accept students seeking to transfer in from outside their attendance zones, officials said. The window for transfer requests closes March 1.

Separately, the enrollment window for Cherokee’s STEM and Fine Arts academies will be open from March 15 to 31. Details on how to apply will be posted later.

The STEM academies include Ball Ground, Canton, Clark Creek and Holly Springs elementary schools. Fine Arts Academies include Hasty and Oak Grove elementary schools. Officials seek comments on South Cobb Drive

Comments are being sought by Smyrna city officials on changes to South Cobb Drive from Concord Road to Windy Hill Road.

A public meeting on draft concept alternatives for the South Cobb Drive Corridor will be 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Aline Wolf Adult Recreation Center, 884 Church St. SE, Smyrna.

Also involved are the Georgia Department of Transportation, Cobb County and Cobb LINC.

The GDOT has approved funds for the construction of a high-intensity activated crosswalk beacon pedestrian signal on South Cobb Drive - south of Plaza Drive - within the next two years.
