City switching to energy-saving LED lights

The city of Chamblee is working with Georgia Power to remove the old roadway lights and replace them with LED roadway lights. The changing out of the old high-pressure sodium lights and install the nearly 1,200 lights will begin next month and take three months to complete. The streetscape lights are not being replaced at this time.

According to Georgia Power, technology improvements, coupled with marketplace acceptance resulted in lower pricing for LED roadway fixtures. On a network lighting control system, the lights will turn on at dusk and off at dawn, to meter energy consumption as well as diagnose any problems with the lights from a remote location. According to the manufacturer, the LED light lifetime estimate is 50,000 hours, and when used 12 hours per night translates to 11.4 years.
