ATHENS — Georgia has its replacement for Tracy Rocker, and it’s someone who saw the Bulldogs in person last season.

Tray Scott, who was just hired at Ole Miss after spending the last two years at North Carolina, is being hired as Georgia’s new defensive line coach, a person familiar with the situation confirmed.

Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze confirmed Scott’s departure in a statement:

“Tray Scott is leaving our staff for another opportunity. We want coaches that are 100 percent committed to winning championships at Ole Miss. Our student-athletes, our staff and Rebel Nation deserve that, and that is what we will bring to this great program.”

Scott was set to earn $375,000 at Ole Miss. Rocker earned $525,000 this past season.

Scott played his college ball at Arkansas Tech from 2003-07 and went to high school in that state.

Georgia defeated North Carolina 33-24 in last year’s season opener, with tailback Nick Chubb rushing for 222 yards. But North Carolina did rack up four sacks.

Perhaps even more notable is the fourth line of Scott’s (soon-to-be-defunct) bio on Ole Miss web site: North Carolina’s red-zone defense ranked 35th nationally. That was a failing of Georgia’s defense last season, when the Bulldogs ranked 114th, with opponents scoring 90.7 percent of the time.

Before his two-year stint at North Carolina, Scott spent two years as the defensive line coach at Tennessee-Martin, an FCS school. And before that he was a graduate assistant at Ole Miss.

Scott was hired by Ole Miss to replace Chris Kiffin, who became the defensive coordinator for his brother, Lane, at Florida Atlantic.
