Vols win without DeShields

Former Norcross star is day-to-day after collision.

Jaime Nared scored 19 points Sunday as Tennessee overcame the absence of leading scorer Diamond DeShields in a 59-46 victory over Arkansas in Knoxville, Tenn.

DeShields, from Norcross High School, left the court on a stretcher Thursday after her head collided with the body of an Alabama player in Tennessee’s 65-57 loss. Lady Volunteers coach Holly Warlick said after Sunday’s game that DeShields’ status is day-to-day and added that “I don’t think it is something that she’ll be out for a long time.”

Alexa Middleton scored 17 points for Tennessee (1710, 8-6 SEC) on Sunday. Mercedes Russell had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Jessica Jackson had 18 points and Malica Monk added 11 for Arkansas (13-14, 2-12), which lost its eighth straight.

Arkansas guard Bailey Zimmerman left the game after colliding with Russell in the first half. Arkansas coach Jimmy Dykes said Zimmerman got six stitches for a cut above an eye.

Missouri 62, No. 6 South Carolina 60: Sophie Cunningham made a layup with 0.6 seconds to lift host Missouri. Cunningham had 26 points on 10-of-16 shooting to help the Tigers (19-9, 9-5 SEC) beat the Gamecocks (22-4, 12-2) for the second time since joining the conference. Sierra Michaelis added 11 points, and Cierra Porter had 10 for Missouri. A’ja Wilson had 23 points on 9-of-11 for South Carolina.

No. 3 Mississipp­i State 72, No. 23 Texas A&M 67: Victoria Vivians scored 25 points to help visiting Mississipp­i State avoid an upset. The Aggies (19-8, 9-5 SEC) led by seven points in the fourth quarter before the Bulldogs (27-1, 13-1) charged back, highlighte­d by Teaira McCowan’s two field goals in the last 1:17. McCowan had 16 points for the Bulldogs. Danni Williams led the Aggies with 23 points.

No. 7 Notre Dame 85, No. 21 Syracuse 80: Brianna Turner had a career-high 31 points and Marina Mabrey scored 22 for Notre Dame (24-3, 12-1 ACC), which has beaten Syracuse 16 straight times. Syracuse (18-9, 9-5) had won 18 straight games at home and set an attendance record Sunday of 11,021.

No. 9 Washington 87, USC 74: Kelsey Plum scored 35 points for visiting Washington (25-4, 13-3 Pac-12) to move into second place on the NCAA’s career scoring list. Her free throw with 2:04 left in the first lifted her to second place behind former Missouri State star Jackie Stiles. Stiles had 3,393 points, and Plum has 3,315. Minyon Moore led USC (14-13, 5-11) with 20 points.

Georgia 70, LSU 65 (OT): Pachis Roberts scored 28 points as the Bulldogs (1413, 6-8 SEC) topped LSU (189, 7-7) in overtime in Athens. Fellow McEachern alum Caliya Robinson added 20 points and had a team-high eight rebounds for Georgia.

Georgia Tech 71, Pittsburgh 57: Francesca Pan led four Yellow Jackets in double figures with 20 points Georgia Tech (15-12, 4-10 ACC) beat Pitt (13-14, 4-10) at McCamish Pavilion.
