Kansas newest No. 1 in AP poll

It was an eventful weekend for Kansas, which clinched its 13th straight Big 12 championsh­ip with a victory at Texas on Saturday.

On Monday, the Jayhawks moved up two places in The Associated Press poll to the top spot, receiving 58 firstplace votes from the 65-member media panel. The Jayhawks spent five weeks at No. 1 last season, but became the sixth No. 1 this season by moving to the top spot for the first time after topranked Gonzaga and No. 2 Villanova lost last week.

Villanova (27-3) remained second and received two first-place votes. UCLA (263) moved up from fifth to third and earned three firstplace votes. Gonzaga (29-1) fell to No. 4.

Texas: Coach Shaka Smart said sophomore swingman Tevin Mack was released from his scholarshi­p. Mack was the Longhorns’ leading scorer when he was suspended in January for the second time this season.

Creighton: Bond was set at $750,000 for Maurice Watson Jr., who is charged with first-degree sexual assault, accused of forcing a 19-year-old Omaha woman into nonconsens­ual sex. The senior point guard, 23, suffered a season-ending knee injury last month and has been suspended from the team and barred from campus since Feb. 13. Monday’s games

(At) No. 1 Kansas 73, Oklahoma 63: Frank Mason III had 23 points and six assists as the Jayhawks (273, 15-2 Big Ten) beat the Sooners (10-19, 4-13).

(At) No. 23 Virginia 53, No. 5 North Carolina 43: Kyle Guy had 17 points, and London Perrantes scored 13 as the Cavaliers (20-9, 10-7 ACC) upset the Tar Heels (25-6, 13-4).

(At) No. 11 Baylor 71, No. 10 West Virginia 62: Johnathan Motley scored 23 points to lead the Bears (24-6, 11-6 Big 12) past the Mountainee­rs (23-7, 11-6).

(At) Virginia Tech 66, No. 25 Miami 61: Ty Outlaw had 24 points to lead the Hokies (21-8, 10-7 ACC) past the Hurricanes (20-9, 10-7).
