Roster spot remains unfilled
The Hawks will take at least a few days to determine how they will fill their open roster spot, coach and president of basketball operations Mike Budenholzer said Monday.
The Hawks have an available spot after Lamar Patterson was waived Sunday. The team and Patterson mutually agreed on the release so Patterson could deal with an unspecified personal issue.
“We will probably take a few days and see what happens over the next few days and maybe more,” Budenholzer said. “It’s good to have that flexibility to figure out what we want to do. We won’t rush to do anything in the next day or two.”
The Hawks desire a third point guard on the roster. They have done without a third point man for most of the season. With starter Dennis Schroder suspended for Friday’s game, the Hawks used Tim Hardaway Jr., Kent Bazemore and Thabo Sefolosha to bring the ball upcourt and initiate the offense behind backup Malcolm Delaney. Budenholzer has used the rotation many other times this season.
Budenholzer would not comment specifically when asked about Brandon Jennings, who was waived by the Knicks on Monday. He said the team will look at a number of scenarios and players. “We have our list, whether it be the overseas guys, guys playing in the D-League and guys who have been bought out or potentially might be bought out,” Budenholzer said.
The NBA’s playoff eligibility waiver deadline is March 1. Any player who had waivers requested on him by his team after March 1 is ineligible for postseason play.
