5 THINGS TO KNOW

-

1. UGA women win, but Tech ousted

The Georgia women advanced in the SEC Tournament on Thursday, beating Auburn 56-52. They’ll face South Carolina at noon today. Meanwhile, the Georgia Tech women were eliminated by Miami 87-71 in the ACC Tourney.

2. Prime time for Bulldogs at Irish

Georgia and Notre Dame will play in prime time on NBC Sept. 9. The game is set for 7:30 p.m., Notre Dame announced Thursday. The Bulldogs will travel to South Bend, Ind., after opening at home against Appalachian State on Sept. 2.

3. Kaepernick to drop protest

Colin Kaepernick will stand during the national anthem during the upcoming season, a source close to the quarterback said. The 49ers quarterback made national headlines last year when he at first sat and then later kneeled during the pregame ceremonies as a way of calling attention to racial injustice in this country. ESPN first reported the news. The quarterback’s decision to stand likely will be well-received by any teams that are considering signing Kaepernick, who is expected to opt out of his current contract with the 49ers and enter the free-agent market next week.

4. IOC targets men-only club

The exclusive Tokyo club that is set to host the 2020 Olympic golf tournament must change its policy of excluding women as full members or the event will go elsewhere, IOC vice president John Coates said Thursday.

5. A quote worthy of baseball lore

From the New York Times obituary on Ned Garver, the only pitcher in American League history to win at least 20 games in a season for a ball club that lost at least 100 times (the 1951 St. Louis Browns): “The crowd didn’t dare boo us,” Garver once said of his nearly five seasons with the lowly Browns before sparse crowds at Sportsman’s Park, which they shared with the popular Cardinals. “The players had them outnumbered.”
