More flight cancellations coming

Delta Air Lines plans to cancel another 40 flights this morning as it works to recover from a massive blizzard hitting the Northeast that caused it to suspend operations in New York on Tuesday.

Atlanta-based Delta canceled more than 900 flights Monday night and Tuesday in New York, Washington D.C., Boston and other airports in the Northeast.

The airline resumed some flights late Tuesday afternoon at New York’s John F. Kennedy International, and planned to run a reduced flight schedule at New York’s LaGuardia Airport as well on Tuesday evening.

The airline said it brought snack carts with sandwiches, doughnuts and salads to customers waiting at the airport.

Delta planned to fly crew members in to affected airports to position them for flights today.

Dallas-based Southwest Airlines, the second-largest carrier at Hartsfield-Jackson, canceled more than 1,300 flights across the country from Monday through today. Southwest has large operations in the Northeast as well as in Chicago, areas hit by the storm.

The Atlanta airport said it was prepared for travelers who may be delayed by the storm.

“We’re continuing to monitor the situation and we remain in close communications” with airlines, said Hartsfield-Jackson spokesman Andy Gobeil.
