Q: I renewed my passport in 2015. It does not need to be renewed until 2025. I am traveling out of the country this year. I was told I have to renew it again now because I am wearing glasses in that picture. Is it true that my passport is now invalid?

—Connie Thompson, Alpharetta

A: You do not need to renew your passport if it was issued before the “no glasses” rule went into effect on Nov. 1, 2016, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Consular Affairs told Q&A on the News via email.

The rule requires that individuals remove their glasses for the photo, when applying for or renewing a passport.

Glasses will need to be taken off at the time of the passport renewal date, the spokeswoman wrote.
