City dedicates park in memory of Pota Coston
The dedication ceremony for the Pota Coston Memorial Garden and Monument at Kenwood Park in Fayetteville has been set for 11 a.m. March 25. The Memorial Garden will open to the public at 10 a.m.
With widespread community support, the fully-funded project is a first of its kind, honoring a trailblazing civic activist who in 2015 became the first African American to serve on the Fayette County Board of Commissioners.
After her death six months into her term, a committee was formed to find an appropriate way to honor and preserve Pota Coston’s legacy.
The result is a beautiful memorial and garden with engraved pavers designed to encourage peaceful reflection.
Overflow parking will be available at Kenwood First Baptist Church, 229 Kenwood Road (corner of Kenwood Road and Hwy 279), with shuttle service to the park for the event that is expected to draw several hundred attendees.

Thirty-eight apply for schools equity director
In the first week after posting, City Schools Decatur had 38 people nationwide applying for the newly created leadership position of equity director.
The job’s primary purpose is reducing disproportionality at CSD in academics, discipline and participation, while also providing professional learning for staff.
Superintendent David Dude said that while many districts nationwide have similarly titled positions, he doesn’t know of any with this specific model. Implementing the charge could take the equity director many years or, as Dude said, “it’ll be more like turning a barge than a tugboat.”
The equity director is the only new job in Dude’s restructuring of the administration. He’s created 10 district leadership positions out of nine department heads.
