Alcohol ordinance fails, new one proposed
An alcoholic beverage ordinance that passed its first reading last month in Hampton recently failed to move further. The measure in question would have allowed consumption of alcohol on public streets and sidewalks during certain city events.
The City Council voted it down this time by a 4-2 vote. However, a new initiative was proposed that could allow an organization hosting a special in a building in the city to apply for a one-time special alcohol use permit which would be approved or denied by the Council. The city attorney was directed to move forward with putting such a measure together and bringing it back at the April council meeting.
Schools approve language materials
After a two-week public review period, the Fayette County Board of Education voted 5-0 Monday to approve four new foreign language textbooks and their related digital resources.
The county will spend $466,450 for the one Spanish, one German and two French editions, which includes six-year license fees.
The materials were previewed at the LaFayette Educational Center and online March 1-17. The titles were chosen after a committee started the selection process in 2015, followed by a yearlong curriculum alignment so that all of the world languages teachers would “be on the same page” before the textbooks were adopted.
