Fred Roberts’ patience is growing thin.

“The county’s contractor came to remove the plates from Hillbrook Way and pour some new asphalt last week. The patch doesn’t look much better than the plates did, and perhaps you can see the asphalt is already sinking down the center. What’s more, several smaller areas on the block were not addressed at all,” Roberts wrote.

As the city watched with horror as part of Interstate 85 collapsed, a reader hopes some other work gets done on the busy expressway as it is restored.

“(On) I-85 northbound, in the third lane from the right shoulder, just north of the North Druid Hills overpass, there is a patch of scalloped pavement that has rattled the teeth of millions of commuters for many years now. The rest of the pavement is fine. Is there any way that GDOT can fill that in ?” asked John Snipes.

Avondale Estates board adds extra session

Avondale Estates’ commission is adding one special called meeting per month dedicated solely to development. Mayor Jonathan Elmore anticipates the extra session will be used for at least the next three to six months. The first is 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall, 21 North Avondale Plaza.

The city commission holds one regular meeting per month, usually on the last Monday, typically a perfunctory approval of agenda items lasting roughly a half hour. Most in-depth discussions by the commission occur during work sessions held the Wednesday prior to each regular meeting. These can last for three hours or more, often dominated by singularly long public comment interludes.

Elmore’s goal is to keep these special called sessions at strictly two hours. Initially, they will deal with how to coordinate the four downtown acres owned by the city with the 13 acres just north of downtown owned by Avila Real Estate.

After this month, the development special session will be held the first Wednesday of the month.
