Kitchen in Cobb had ‘molded’ berries

- By Ben Brasch ben.brasch@ajc.com

The kitchen of the Radisson in Cobb County failed a recent health inspection. The hotel scored a 59/U on its inspection. Problems ranged from being unable to show documents proving staff had been trained in food safety to “six containers of molded strawberries” in the walk-in cooler, according to the report.

Danny Lyons, the hotel’s assistant general manager, said the hiccups were “operational issues due to (a) new cook being in kitchen. It was not a cleanliness issue.”

The inspector did find food debris on many kitchen tools, a lack of paper towels, two cartons of half-and-half five weeks past their expiration date. The inspector also saw the staff using Formula 409 to sanitize kitchen surfaces that come into contact with food, but that product isn’t approved for food contact.

The kitchen received a 92/A and a 99/A on its previous inspections.

Lyons said many of the issues identified were corrected while the inspector was still there.

Follow-up inspections are usually done within 10 days of the original evaluation.

A reader is concerned over the state of roads on the west side of Atlanta.

“My wife and I live on the west side of Atlanta close to Howell Mill Road. Driving on this side of town often reminds me of past experiences on the roads in developing countries. The roads are abysmal, and certainly in need of a complete makeover,” the reader wrote.

“If you ever have the chance to ride passenger in this area, have your driver take you for a spin down Huff Road, off of Howell Mill Road, and head towards Marietta Boulevard. If you close your eyes for the five minute stretch of rocky ground and imagine yourself on a safari cruising across the vast Australian terrain, you can almost hear the sound of the kangaroos trotting along with you as you bounce up and down in your seat,” he added.

He said he and his wife love living on the west side and are very loyal to the city. They would love to see roads improved on their side of town in the near future, if nothing but to minimize the risk of car damage and potential accidents.
