Tech kicker Butker picked by Panthers,

Former Alpharetta, Vols star Dobbs selected by Steelers.

- Staff, wire reports

Former Georgia Tech kicker Harrison Butker was selected in the seventh round of the NFL draft by the Carolina Panthers on Saturday. He was the 233rd pick overall and the fourth kicker taken in the draft.

Butker, who became Tech’s all-time leading scorer in the final game of his career, is the second kicker in school history to be drafted. He joins perhaps the most celebrated Tech kicker ever, Scott Sisson.

A four-year starter, Butker did not attempt many field goals, both in his career (60) and senior season (17), nor did he earn All-ACC honors. But he proved himself a clutch kicker with a powerful leg. He finished sixth nationally in 2016 in touchback percentage (74 percent) and was 4 for 7 in his career on field-goal tries of 50 yards or longer.

With his selection, Tech has had a player selected in the past four drafts and 11 of the past 12.

Elsewhere

■ Colts: DT Grover Stewart from Albany State was selected in the fourth round, No. 144 overall. The 6-4 Stewart compiled 27 sacks in his collegiate career and has the ability to play anywhere on the defensive line.

■ Steelers: The selection of Tennessee’s Josh Dobbs (Alpharetta) in the fourth round comes after Ben Roethlisberger briefly contemplated retirement after the 2016 season. Dobbs of course will compete, but whether he can unseat Landry Jones at No. 2 or settle in at No. 3 as a rookie is the question more than whether he ultimately can succeed Roethlisberger.

■ Chiefs: With stalwart Derrick Johnson coming back from a second ruptured Achilles tendon and nearing the end of his career, the Chiefs took a late-round chance at finding a replacement. Georgia Southern LB Ukeme Eligwe started his career at Florida State, where he was dismissed for a violation of team rules, and left school with a year of eligibility remaining.

■ Saints: New Orleans traded a 2018 second-round pick and this year’s seventh rounder to San Francisco so they could draft Tennessee running back Alvin Kamara (Norcross) early in the third round.
