5 THINGS WE LEARNED

- Compiled by Rick Crotts

1. Trubisky gets time

The Bears made it clear Mike Glennon, signed to a $45 million, three-year contract with $18.5 million guaranteed, will be the starter this year. Glennon has only $2.5 million guaranteed after this season. This year will be Mitchell Trubisky’s redshirt season. The Bears shocked everybody by trading up one spot, to No. 2, to select the North Carolina quarterback.

2. Defense comes first

49ers rookie general manager John Lynch traded down one spot to No. 3 to get Stanford DL Solomon Thomas (above) and then packaged one of the extra picks from that deal with his own second-rounder to get Alabama LB Reuben Foster at 31. Coach Kyle Shanahan and Lynch can take their time to rebuild the 49ers.

3. Finally a QB for Browns?

Cleveland became the first team since the Vikings in 2013 to make three picks in the first round, but the Browns not using any of them on a QB was a surprise. They’ve started 26 since 1999. The Browns took Notre Dame’s DeShone Kizer in the second round, but he needs time to develop.

4. Texans get their QB

Deshaun Watson is the newest QB for the Texans. For now, the two-time Heisman Trophy finalist is also a backup. They traded away the 25th overall pick in this year’s draft as well as their firstround selection next season to nab Watson. He joins a good team and will not be asked to win games immediately.

5. Bengals backlash

The Bengals are facing a backlash over drafting RB Joe Mixon, who punched a woman in the face while at Oklahoma. WCPOTV posted an editorial saying the club had gone too far this time. The editorial urged fans to stop buying Bengals tickets and instead donate the money to organizations that work to prevent violence against women.
