1.Astros 8, Braves 3:
Carlos Correa and Carlos Beltran hit consecutive homers off struggling Bartolo Colon during a five-run first inning as host Houston cruised to a win Tuesday night. Colon (1-4) gave up eight runs and three homers, both season highs, in 5⅔ innings. His ERA ballooned to 7.22.
2. Gym Dogs turn to familiar face:
In a bid to revive its once dominant gymnastics program, the University of Georgia has hired perhaps the best gymnast in UGA and NCAA history, Courtney Kupets (right), as head coach. C2
3. WNBA nears tipoff:
The Atlanta Dream, who open their season Saturday at Connecticut, were ranked eighth out of 12 teams in the AP’s WNBA preseason poll. Defending champion Los Angeles Sparks were ranked first, and the Minnesota Lynx, led by former Collins Hill High School star Maya Moore, were second.
4. FedEx Cup extended:
The PGA Tour announced a 10-year extension for the title sponsorship of the FedEx Cup, giving the lucrative series continuity and allowing some flexibility as the tour explores reshaping its season. The tour now is looking to tighten the schedule so the FedEx Cup ends before the start of the NFL season. Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said there was no discussion about rotating the Tour Championship out of East Lake in Atlanta. More golf, C3
5. Early signing period gets final stamp:
High school seniors can now sign football letters of intent in December in addition to the traditional signing period that starts the first Wednesday of February. The Collegiate Commissioners Association, as expected, has approved the new signing period, the last step in the process of implementing a package of reforms passed by the NCAA in April. College football’s first early signing period is scheduled for Dec. 20-22.
