Blood clot surgery sidelines Familia

Mets not sure if their closer will return this season.

New York Mets closer Jeurys Familia had surgery Friday after being diagnosed with a blood clot near his right armpit, an injury that general manager Sandy Alderson said will sideline the reliever for several months.

The Mets put Familia on the 10-day disabled list Friday and said it was not certain whether the reliever will return this season.

“We do believe that this is something that will keep him out several months,” Alderson said. “It’s possible that he’ll be back by the end of the year. It’s possible he won’t. We just don’t know at this point.”

Familia, 27, is 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA and three saves this season. He led the majors with a Mets-record 51 saves last year.

The Mets also activated first baseman Lucas Duda (left elbow) from the DL.

Brewers: Outfielder Ryan Braun was put on the 10-day disabled list with a strained left calf, and infielder Eric Sogard was brought up from Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Nationals: Right-handed relievers Koda Glover (left hip) and Shawn Kelley (lower back) were reinstated from the DL and right-hander A.J. Cole and left-hander Matt Grace were sent to Triple-A Syracuse. Washington’s bullpen is 29th in the majors with a 5.40 ERA and a .284 opponents’ batting average, and has blown six of 16 save attempts.

Orioles: Outfielder Adam Jones, the target of racial taunts during a game in Boston on May 1, donated $20,000 to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, Mo. Jones plans to visit the museum and speak with its president, Bob Kendrick, today before the Orioles continue their series against the Royals.

Yankees: Jacoby Ellsbury reached base on catcher’s interference Thursday for the 28th time in his career, one behind the mark set by Pete Rose. Ellsbury set a record by doing it 12 times last season.

Angels: Outfielder Mike Trout went 0 for 4 as DH on Thursday after missing five straight games and six of the previous seven with a tight left hamstring. “I missed some pitches tonight, fouled off some I should hit, but that’s baseball,” the twotime AL MVP said.

Rangers: Third baseman Adrian Beltre, who hasn’t played yet this season because of calf issues, took batting practice on the field Thursday for the first time since he aggravated the muscle three weeks ago. Beltre also took some ground balls, but still hasn’t run at full speed.
