Cano hits DL for first time since 2006

Second baseman is ninth Mariner put on DL since opener.

Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano was placed on the 10-day disabled list Tuesday with a quadriceps strain, the latest Seattle player sidelined by injury.

Cano missed the previous five games with the strain. An MRI confirmed the strain and the Mariners decided a few extra days of rest would be the best move. It’s only the second time in Cano’s career that he has gone on the disabled list, and the first was in 2006.

Cano, hitting .296 with eight homers and 28 RBIs, is the ninth Seattle player to land on the disabled list since the start of the regular season and the sixth since April 26.

Mets: Shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera (left thumb) was placed on the 10-day DL. The Mets also signed right-handed reliever Neil Ramirez, who rejected an outright assignment from the Blue Jays and became a free agent.

Indians: Outfielder Abraham Almonte (right biceps) was put on the 10-day DL. Outfielder Bradley Zimmer, the Indians’ first-round draft pick in 2014 and the top prospect in the organization, was promoted from Triple-A.

Padres: Left fielder Travis Jankowski has a fracture in his left foot and will be out an additional six weeks. Jankowski fouled a ball off his foot April 14 in Atlanta and was placed on the DL on April 24.

Rockies: Right-hander Chad Bettis said he finished his last round of chemotherapy two months after doctors discovered his testicular cancer had spread. Bettis, 28, had surgery in November to remove the cancer, but it returned and he was forced to leave the team in March for chemotherapy. There’s no timetable for his return.

Astros: Yuli Gurriel hit a grand slam in Monday night’s win in Miami, and Alex Bregman hit one in Sunday night’s win at Yankee Stadium. It’s the first time Houston has hit grand slams in consecutive games.

Blue Jays: Toronto set a franchise record by hitting five batters in Monday’s 10-6 loss to visiting Atlanta. Starter Mike Bolsinger hit Brandon Phillips in the first, Adonis Garcia in the second and Jace Peterson in the fourth. Leonel Campos hit Tyler Flowers in the sixth and Aaron Loup hit Nick Markakis in the eighth.

■ Manager John Gibbons said third baseman Josh Donaldson (right calf ) could return as soon as this weekend. Donaldson has not played since April 13. Also, shortstop Troy Tulowitzki (right hamstring) is in rehab at Single-A Dunedin and is expected to come off the DL on Thursday.

Angels: Mike Trout became the first Angel to homer in four consecutive games Monday night since Mark Trumbo in May 2012.
