Cycling: American rider Evan Huffman won from a five-man breakaway that barely survived a hard-chasing peloton, taking the fourth stage of the Tour of California. Huffman was followed across the line by Rally Cycling teammate Rob Britton in a banner day for the U.S.-based squad that was granted one of the wild cards to compete in the race.
■ Spain’s Omar Fraile won the Giro d’Italia’s 11th stage as Dutchman Tom Dumoulin kept his overall lead.
College basketball: BYU forward Eric Mika will remain in the NBA draft and hire an agent, ending his college playing career with two years of eligibility left. The 6-foot10, 230-pounder averaged team highs with 20.3 points, 9.2 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game last season.
■ Marshall guard Jon Elmore withdrew his name from the NBA draft and will return for his senior season.
College baseball: Tennessee coach Dave Serrano will resign at the end of the season. Serrano is 157-160 in six seasons with no NCAA Tournament appearances. College football: San Diego State cut off talks to have its team share a stadium with a group that wants to attract an MLS team as the centerpiece of a billion-dollar development at the site of Qualcomm Stadium. Media: The NHL Network gained exclusive U.S. television rights to broadcast the International Ice Hockey Federation world championships from 2018 through 2020.
