Reports: Red Sox’s Price to start Monday

-

Boston Red Sox left-hander David Price, sidelined since March 1 with soreness in his throwing elbow, will make his season debut Monday against the White Sox in Chicago, according to several reports Thursday.

The 2012 Cy Young Award winner threw 89 pitches but lasted only 3⅔ innings and gave up six runs (three earned) in his last start with Triple-A Pawtucket on Wednesday. Price struggled with his control, although his fastball ranged between 92-96 mph.

In two rehab starts, he has allowed nine runs (six earned) on 12 hits in just 5⅔ innings.

Price strained his elbow early in spring training and hasn’t pitched against major league hitters since he lost Game 2 of the American League Division Series last October, allowing five runs in 3⅓ innings against Cleveland.

Yankees: Center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury went on the disabled list with a concussion and sprained neck after hitting the wall Wednesday on a drive by Kansas City’s Alcides Escobar in New York’s 3-0 win.

■ Slumping Masahiro Tanaka gets extra rest with the Yankees-Royals rainout. The game will be made up at Yankee Stadium on Sept. 25, previously an off day for both teams. A start time had not been determined. Tanaka has given up 14 runs and seven homers over 4⅔ innings in his past two outings.

Rays: Tommy Hunter (strained right calf ) was reinstated from the 10-day DL and got three outs to complete a six-hitter Thursday, while right-hander Jumbo Diaz (right arm fatigue) went on the 10-day DL.

Pirates: Outfielder Gregory Polanco (strained left hamstring) was activated from the DL, and outfielder Danny Ortiz was optioned to Triple-A.

Nationals: Dusty Baker will miss the weekend series against San Diego to attend son Darren’s graduation, and bench coach Chris Speier will assume managerial duties.

Braves: Right-hander Josh Collmenter was designated for assignment after he surrendered three homers and seven runs in the 10th inning of a loss to Pittsburgh on Wednesday.

Etc.: Rachel Robinson, wife of Jackie Robinson, will receive the Buck O’Neil Lifetime Achievement Award from the Hall of Fame on July 29, the day before this year’s induction ceremony.
