Virtual reality app is on the way

-

Baseball games will soon arrive on virtual-reality headsets.

Video in the new At Bat VR app won’t be in VR. Rather, the app places you behind home plate and shows you graphical depictions of each pitch. That includes a colored streak — red for strikes and green for balls — tracing the ball’s trajectory.

The data come from sensors Major League Baseball already has in its stadiums.

Traditional TV coverage of the games will appear on a virtual screen in front of you.

The VR app comes out Thursday and works with Android phones and headsets compatible with Google’s Daydream VR system. There’s no version for iPhones.

It’s included with Major League Baseball’s existing streaming packages, which start at about $87 for the season for live video.

Run-off winner

Salt Lake Bees infielder Nolan Fontana won a game in the bottom of the 11th with a walk-off home run — and an inside-the-park job, at that.

On second thought, wouldn’t that make it a runoff homer?

Brake time is over

Reds stolen-base champ Billy Hamilton has challenged John Ross III , the Bengals rookie receiver who broke the NFL combine record, to a 40-yard dash.

Hamilton’s biggest challenge, pundits predict, will be resisting the urge to slide after 90 feet.

Beware of curves

What better pitcher to throw off-speed stuff in garbage time than Seattle U’s right-hander Janson Junk?

Tums not included

Food fare at Tampa Bay Rays games includes a 4-pound burger and fries, with game tickets and other prizes awarded to anyone who can eat it in 30 minutes.

Fortunately, no one has channeled their inner Ernie Banks and said, “Let’s eat two.”

Trainer’s room

■ White Sox: Yoan Moncada, rated the game’s top prospect by Baseball America, remains on the seven-day DL at Triple-A with a sore left thumb.

■ Giants :OF Hunter Pence, who is on the 10-day disabled list with a left hamstring strain, is doing some baseball activities, like running and hitting. “He’s on his way, but to put him out there in a game situation with game speed; he’s a week away,” manager Bruce Bochy said.
