Police officer ‘fighting for his life’
A New York City police officer was “fighting for his life” after he was injured late Saturday by being dragged by a stolen car in Brooklyn, Mayor Bill de Blasio said Sunday.
The officer, Dalsh Veve, 35, was questioning the driver of a black Honda sedan parked in front of a fire hydrant around 11:50 p.m. near East 53rd Street and Tilden Avenue, the police commissioner, James P. O’Neill, said at a news conference early Sunday at Kings County Hospital Center, where the officer was being treated. The driver sped off, dragging Veve for two and a half blocks, O’Neill said.
De Blasio said the officer remained in critical condition Sunday. Veve suffered severe head injuries and body trauma, police said.
Veve has been a city police officer for nine years, O’Neill said. He is married and has a 2-year-old daughter.
Jet pulled out of mud in San Antonio
Crews have removed an American Airlines plane from mud after it veered off a runway at San Antonio International Airport.
American spokeswoman Alexis Aran Coello said Sunday that investigators are trying to determine what prompted the pilot of Flight 2214 to abort takeoff and slide off the runway Saturday. She said weather hasn’t been ruled out as a factor.
The incident suspended flights for several hours. No injuries were reported.
National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Peter Knudson said the agency reviewed the incident and followed up with American but doesn’t plan an investigation.
Knudson said the Boeing 737 wasn’t damaged.
The plane was heading to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport from Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Friday when it was diverted to San Antonio
Tiananmen Square anniversary marked
Police detained at least 11 Chinese activists after a pair of small events to commemorate the 28th anniversary of the bloody crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square, according to human rights groups and activists.
Meanwhile, thousands gathered in Hong Kong for the annual candlelight vigil to remember the events of June 4, 1989.
Tiananmen Square and the rest of Beijing are placed under tight security for the anniversary, but activist Li Xiaoling apparently had her photograph taken at the square early Sunday.
Li and fellow activists Li Zhou and Pu Yongzhu were taken to the Xicheng police station in Beijing, Amnesty International and human rights activists said.
