Nats’ Werth placed on DL

Slugger in walking boot after fouling pitch off left foot.

-

The Washington Nationals placed outfielder Jayson Werth on the 10-day disabled list Monday with a left foot contusion.

Werth, 38, fouled a pitch off his left foot in the ninth inning of Saturday’s 10-4 loss at Oakland. Werth did not play Sunday, when he was seen on crutches and in a walking boot in the clubhouse. Werth, who fouled a ball off his same foot in spring training, is batting .262 with eight home runs and 18 RBIs in 47 games.

Also, Ryan Raburn was called up from Triple-A Syracuse, and right-hander Rafael Martin was designated for assignment.

Cubs: Closer Wade Davis (2-0, 0.89 ERA and 12 saves) was placed on paternity leave and right-hander Dylan Floro was recalled from Triple-A.

Athletics: Right-hander Jesse Hahn (1-4, 3.81 ERA), who is expected to come off the disabled list with a right triceps strain, will start tonight against Toronto.

Phillies: Shortstop Freddy Galvis on Sunday became the first Phillie to homer from both sides of the plate in a game since Jimmy Rollins on July 20, 2011, against Chicago.

Mariners: First baseman Danny Valencia singled in his first two at-bats Sunday to give him nine consecutive hits over three games. That tied the Mariners record set by Raul Ibanez from Sept. 22-24, 2004. Valencia’s hitting surge raised his batting average from .247 to .284.

■ Cuban left-hander Ariel Miranda is 5-0 with a 3.47 ERA over his last eight starts.

Royals: First baseman Eric Hosmer entered Monday’s game against visiting Houston having reached base in 36 straight home games, the longest streak since Carlos Beltran matched a club record with 44 straight from 2001-02.

Blue Jays: Toronto went 0 for 24 with runners in scoring position in their fourgame weekend series against the Yankees, which they split.

Rangers: Rougned Odor homered in his first two at-bats of the season, right after the second baseman got a new six-year contract. But Odor, the only Ranger to start every game, is hitting .204 with eight homers. He struck out four times in a 6-5 loss Saturday to the Astros — with runners on base each time, including the last out of the game. He was dropped down in the batting order and homered Sunday, with the bases empty and Texas down 7-0.
