5 THINGS TO KNOW

-

1. Dickey’s drought over:

R.A. Dickey allowed just three hits in seven innings to earn his first victory in five weeks Thursday as the Braves defeated the Phillies 3-1 at SunTrust Field. Dickey set a season high with eight strikeouts and walked none. Matt Kemp had an RBI double in the Braves’ two-run first inning.

2. Cinderella story in Paris:

On the day she turned 20, Jelena Ostapenko (right) became the first unseeded French Open finalist since 1983, using big and bold groundstrokes to end points lickety-split on the way to beating 30th-seeded Timea Bacsinszky in three sets on Thursday. C4

3. Atlantan in doubles final:

Atlanta’s Donald Young and Santiago Gonzalez of Mexico are through to the men’s doubles final at the French Open.

4. Controversy over minute

of silence: When a minute’s silence to honor the victims of last weekend’s London attack was observed at a World Cup qualifier Thursday, the 11 Australian players on the field lined up at the center circle with arms on their teammates’ shoulders. Their opponents from Saudi Arabia, however, milled about separately on the other side, seemingly ignoring the gesture. The Saudis, who were aware in advance of the tribute, said“this tradition was not in keeping with Saudi culture and they would move to their side of the field and respect (Australian) custom whilst taking their own positions on the field,” according to reports.

5. High school provides

sports hijabs: Deering High School in Portland, Maine, is providing sport hijabs with the goal of making Muslim girls comfortable — and boosting their participation in sports. The lightweight scarves stay put and are less bulky than other hijabs.
