Mets’ Harvey headed to DL

Oft-injured starting pitcher to join 2B Walker on sideline.

New York Mets pitcher Matt Harvey will be sidelined for several weeks with a stress injury to the scapula bone in the right shoulder, the latest injury to a career already slowed by Tommy John surgery and a thoracic outlet syndrome operation.

The injury-ravaged Mets also placed second baseman Neil Walker on the 10-day disabled list with a partially torn left hamstring. He was replaced by infielder Gavin Cecchini, who was recalled Thursday from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said Harvey is expected to go on the DL today.

The Mets, reluctant to be precise with outlooks of injured players, said only that Harvey and Walker are expected to miss “several weeks.”

Alderson said ace Noah Syndergaard, who was expected to be out until after the All-Star break with torn lat muscle, wouldn’t be able to throw for four more weeks. He’s been on the disabled list since May 1, and Alderson said the timetable didn’t reflect any setback.

Harvey had a platelet-rich plasma injection at the Hospital for Special Surgery on Thursday, a day after his fastball averaged 91.8 mph against the Chicago Cubs, down from 94-96.5 mph in his previous starts this season, according to Brooks Baseball.

Yankees: Left-hander CC Sabathia was diagnosed with a Grade 2 left hamstring strain and could be out at least four weeks.

Red Sox: Reliever Tyler Thornburg will have season-ending right shoulder surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome. Thornburg has not pitched for Boston since he was acquired in an offseason trade with the Brewers for Travis Shaw.

Athletics: Pitching coach Curt Young was fired and replaced by bullpen coach Scott Emerson. Young was in his sixth season of his second stint as Oakland’s pitching coach.

Angels: Reliever Huston Street (right lat strain) got just one out in his rehab outing for Single-A Inland Empire on Wednesday, allowing two hits, two walks and three runs.

Astros: Cuban righthander Elian Rodriguez, 20, agreed to a minor league deal that includes a $1.9 million signing bonus.

Cubs: Chris Singleton, whose mother was among those killed two years ago by Dylann Roof during the shooting inside a South Carolina church, was selected by Chicago with the final pick of the 19th round, No. 585 overall. Singleton is a right-handed-hitting center fielder at Charleston Southern University.

Twins: The team will honor Minneapolis icon Prince tonight during a game with the Cleveland Indians at Target Field. The first 10,000 fans at the stadium will receive limited edition “Purple Rain” umbrellas. During the seventh-inning stretch, fans will be asked to open the umbrella in a moment of remembrance of the late rock star.

Nationals: Outfielder Chris Heisey, on the disabled list since May 24 with a ruptured right biceps, will not join the team on its trip to New York and Miami, manager Dusty Baker said.
