Tigers’ Martinez out of hospital

Designated hitter is expected to rest at home for a week.

Victor Martinez didn’t answer Brad Ausmus’ call Saturday morning.

The Detroit Tigers’ manager let it slide because his designated hitter was in the process of getting released from the hospital, and because Martinez texted him back.

The message? Martinez is feeling a lot better and was headed home, where he will stay in the metro Detroit area for further monitoring over the next week.

“The thought process is probably a week of rest,” Ausmus said.

Martinez was hospitalized after Thursday’s game with an irregular heartbeat. He underwent testing Friday and stayed a second night as doctors continued to monitor him, normalizing the heart rate and searching for a reason why the problem occurred.

Martinez will not accompany the team on its sevengame West Coast trip to Seattle and San Diego, beginning Monday.

He first reported the symptoms in the seventh inning of Thursday night’s win over the Tampa Bay Rays, after reaching first base on an error. At first base, covered in sweat, he notified first base coach Omar Vizquel of his body temperature and heart rate, before opting to leave the game.

Martinez, 38, is hitting .261 with five home runs and 29 RBIs this season.

Orioles: Sidelined with a right oblique strain, Chris Davis can’t seem to get comfortable lying down or sitting in a chair. So it will likely be after the All-Star break before the first baseman is ready to swing a bat. Davis went on the 10-day disabled list Tuesday.

“It’s kind of a feel thing right now, the first week to 10 days,” Davis said. “Just basically trying to get the soreness and inflammation and all this discomfort out.” Davis leads the Orioles with 14 homers but has struck out 95 times in 217 official at-bats.

Braves: Left fielder Matt Kemp says he’s available to pinch-hit and hopes to return from a leg injury today against Miami. Kemp has missed one game, a 5-0 loss to the Marlins on Friday, with a sore left hamstring. He considers this injury minor compared to a strained right hamstring that landed him on the DL in April.

Kemp says the previous injury was “more serious,” and sitting out this time was “just being careful.” Kemp is hitting .327 and leads the Braves with 32 RBIs.

Twins: Left-hander Adam Wilk (0-2) was designated for assignment and right-hander Alan Busenitz’s contract was selected from TripleA Rochester.

Rockies: Nolan Arenado committed his first error of the season Saturday. Arenado’s 71-game errorless streak, which included the last three games of 2016, was the third-longest by a third baseman in club history. Vinny Castilla went 75 games without an error in 2004 and Jeff Cirillo’s 85-game errorless streak in 2001 tops the list.

Giants: Left-hander Madison Bumgarner (DL, left AC shoulder strain) threw a bullpen session in Arizona on Saturday.

Blue Jays: Right-hander Aaron Sanchez came through a 25-pitch bullpen session on Friday with no problem as he continues to progress from blister issues on his pitching hand.
