Tigers testy on closed meeting

Manager Ausmus offers terse reply when questioned.

The Detroit Tigers, who were 39-49 before Saturday’s home game against Toronto, held a team meeting Saturday afternoon, then declined to give any details about what was discussed.

Some position players were in the clubhouse when reporters were allowed back in after the meeting. A few minutes later, the pitching staff came out of a separate meeting. Manager Brad Ausmus, who confirmed he attended the team meeting, wouldn’t discuss anything about what was said.

Asked why the team had a meeting, Ausmus said in a calm tone: “None of your damn business. If it was your business, I would have invited you in to be in the meeting.” When a reporter joked he might have lost the invitation, Ausmus said: “You never got one.”

Detroit routed Toronto 11-1 Saturday night.

Angels: Outfielder Mike Trout looked healthy in his first game since May 28, when he tore a ligament in his left thumb while sliding headfirst into second base. In his comeback game late Friday from the first significant injury of his career , the twotime AL MVP singled in the third inning and promptly stole second — again sliding headfirst, as he promised.

“It was kind of like opening day for me,” said Trout, who finished 1-for-5 in a 2-1 loss to Tampa Bay. “You take so much time off, and you want to finally get out there in a game. ... I’m not changing the way I play. I’m being aggressive and I’m going to steal bases and slide headfirst.”

Giants: San Francisco made room on the 25-man roster for ace Madison Bumgarner by placing Johnny Cueto on the 10-day disabled list with blisters on the tips of his right thumb, forefinger and middle finger.

Bumgarner was scheduled to start Saturday night’s game against San Diego after missing three months with a sprained left shoulder. Cueto (6-7, 4.59 ERA) left Friday’s game after four innings because of the blisters. With Cueto expected to miss at least two starts, Matt Cain moves back into the rotation.

Astros: Injured ace Dallas Keuchel (9-0, 1.67 ERA) is scheduled to begin a rehabilitation assignment Monday with Double-A Corpus Christi. The lefty hasn’t pitched for the AL West leaders since June 2 because of a pinched nerve in his neck.

Royals: Right-hander Nate Karns (2-2, 4.17 ERA) will have surgery Wednesday to remove a rib that’s causing nerve pain in his right forearm. He will miss the remainder of the season.
