Following Gold Cup games for U.S., goalkeeper Guzan arrives Tuesday

Atlanta United is scheduled to introduce goalkeeper Brad Guzan on Tuesday.

Guzan was one of six players that U.S. manager Bruce Arena elected to change out for the pending knockout rounds of the Gold Cup. Guzan started two games in the Gold Cup, playing in a tie with Panama and a 3-2 win over Martinique. They marked his 55th and 56th appearances with the U.S. men’s national team.

Tuesday will be Guzan’s first session with Atlanta med ia since it was announced in late January he would join the MLS expansion side after spending nine years in England. Though he was in Atlanta United’s training camp for a week before reporting for the Gold Cup, the team elected not to make him available for interviews until the MLS secondary transfer window opened July 10.

Guzan’s arrival is fortuitous. Alec Kann, who started the season’s first 18 league games as well as two U.S. Open Cup matches, is out for several weeks with a quad strain. Kyle Reynish started the most recent game, a 4-2 win over San Jose.

Atlanta United will play at Orlando City on Friday, which could mark Guzan’s first appearance with the team.

Guzan is an Illinois native who played at South Carolina. He was selected with the sec o nd pick of the 2005 draft by Chivas USA. He made 79 appearances during which he was named the league’s goalkeeper of the year in 2007.

Aston Villa in England’s Premier League bought his rights in 2008 and he made 144 appearances for the squad. He also played for Hull City and most recently Middlesbrough.
