Nationals have new leader in homers

Zimmerman’s 235th career shot moves him past Guerrero.

Ryan Zimmerman set the Nationals’ franchise home run record with a solo homer in Washington’s 6-1 victory over the Reds on Monday.

Zimmerman’s 235th career homer moved him ahead of Vladimir Guerrero for most in Expos/Nationals history. Guerrero quickly tweeted congratulations, saying he doesn’t mind being second.

“It’s special to be in one place your entire career,” said Zimmerman, in his 12th season with the team that made him a first-round draft pick as a third baseman (he now plays first).

“You can’t do stuff like this if you’re not in the same place for a long time. So I feel very lucky to have spent my entire career here, honored to have hit more home runs than any Expo or National. It’s cool.”

Pirates: Starling Marte, the 28-year-old, two-time Gold Glove winner and onetime All-Star, is expected to return from his 80-game suspension tonight when Pittsburgh hosts Milwaukee. The Pirates are 38-41 since Marte’s absence on April 18.

Yankees: Right-hander Michael Pineda is set to have Tommy John surgery today to repair a torn ligament in his right elbow, likely putting him out of action until at least late next year. Pineda, 28, is 8-4 with a 4.39 ERA in 17 starts. He is eligible for free agency after this season.

■ Yankees first baseman Greg Bird will have ankle surgery today and is expected to miss the next six weeks. Bird hit just .100 with one home run in 19 games before he was placed on the disabled list May 2 with a bone bruise on his right ankle. Bird missed all of last season while recovering from shoulder surgery.

Braves: Utility players Sean Rodriguez (torn rotator cuff ) and Danny Santana (bacterial infection) were activated from the disabled list and right-hander Jason Hursh and infielder Jace Peterson were optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett.

Royals: Reliever Neftali Feliz was reinstated from the paternity list and righthander Miguel Almonte was optioned to Triple-A Omaha. Kansas City also recalled outfielder Billy Burns from the Storm Chasers and optioned Jorge Soler to the same club.

Rangers: Yu Darvish moved past Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan into fourth place on the Rangers’ career strikeout list when he struck out Brandon Moss in the fourth inning Sunday. It was his 940th strikeout in his 120th start. Ryan, baseball’s alltime strikeout king, struck out 939 in 129 starts with Texas.
