College basketball: Former Kentucky star Jerry Bird, a member of the school’s Athletics Hall of Fame who had his No. 22 jersey retired, died Sunday at a hospital in Corbin, Ky. He was 83.
College football: Florida State is the preseason pick to win the ACC and reigning Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson of Louisville is the preseason player of the year, the conference announced following a poll of 167 media members who attended last week’s media days. ... Florida receiver Antonio Callaway pleaded no contest to misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia and was fined $301.
Golf: Brice Garnett won the Web.com Tour’s Utah Championship late Sunday to earn a PGA Tour card for next season. Garnett, 33, closed with a 6-under 65 for a one-stroke victory.
NHL: Defenseman Brian Campbell is retiring after 17 seasons and winning the Stanley Cup with the Blackhawks in 2010. Campbell, 38, is expected to join the team’s business operations department. Campbell had 87 goals and 417 assists for 504 points in 1,082 regularseason games with the Sabres, Sharks, Blackhawks and Panthers. Swimming: Giorgio Minisini and Manila Flamini earned Italy its first gold of the world championships in Budapest, Hungary, by winning the mixed duet technical synchronized event. Bill May and Kanako Spendlove took bronze, the United States’ first medal in Hungary. Track and field: Fourtime Olympic medalist Frank Fredericks of Namibia was suspended from duty by track and field’s governing body while he is investigated for alleged corruption suspected of being linked to the 2016 Olympics hosting vote.
